How wonderful it is for me to arrive at the Golden Gate Senior Center at 10 am on any weekday to see a crowd of 40 to 60 people all talking and enjoying each other’s company. Before sitting down to a serious game of dominos, a visitor said, “there’s a reason for my visit to the Center almost daily. It’s a place for fun and friendship. And it’s a place for food— a place that helps me get by.”
This scene is the result of years of hard work by the dedicated board members of Collier Senior Resources to put together a program that addressed our mission:
‘To facilitate access to comprehensive services and resources that enhance the quality of life of older adults and their caregivers in Collier County, empowering them to maintain independent and meaningful lives.’
To quote our Program Director, Tatiana Fortune, MSW, “The Golden Gate Senior Center works with partner agencies to create an atmosphere and programs which provide assistance for low to moderate income seniors–that assistance comes in many forms.”
The Collier County hot lunch program is just one of the many activities that take place at the Center. In addition to hot lunches, Meals of Hope operates a food pantry Thursday servicing over 250 families with a weekly food basket.
As important as the food programs are, the Center is so much more. On any given day there are activities to keep even the most ambitious busy. There is no time to get lonely at the Center: sewing, quilting, exercise classes, bingo and Friday matinee with movies. On other days, there are offerings such as computer training, English as a Second Language, financial literacy and help with checking accounts and taxes. AARP has a low income development and training employment activity for those over 55. Once a month, there is a health-oriented day with a blood pressure clinic, eye sight evaluations, and presentations on good health.
The atmosphere at the Center is bright, airy and uplifting, giving everyone a positive feeling upon entering. The Golden Gate Senior Center is a positive force not only for our 350+ members, but also for the community where we live. On Wednesday, February 3, 2016, the Center is throwing the doors open to everyone from 2 pm to 4 pm where we will showcase all the Center has to offer including, of course, refreshments. Golden Gate Senior Center is located at 4898 Coronado Parkway in Golden Gate. See you there!
